Debates on the topic of “Active Citizenship” under the project EUth, conducted at the High School of Sciences and Mathematics in Blagoevgrad

On May 27-28 the Association organized another debating event at the High School of Sciences and Mathematics “Acad. Sergei Korolev” with 48 students from the tenth and eleventh grade. The topics of the debate concerned the active civic participation of young people in public life, the involvement of youth councils in policy-making, and the trust of young people in institutions.

The debate provoked the young people to reflect on the rights and duties of every citizen in a democratic society and the responsibility to participate in the creation of new policies. Participants approached the issues with objectivity and critical thinking, even when their personal opinions differed from the position they were defending. During the debates, the young people came to appreciate the ability to communicate logical arguments in support of their thesis and identified the importance of considering all positions on a topic. The students shared their ideas on how to improve European Union policies by raising citizens’ awareness of European institutions and their initiatives. Some of them expressed their willingness to be involved in future events on active youth participation in civil society.
